Search and find like the professionals: getting the most from search engines

And, Or, and Not?

You can refine your internet search by using logical connectors. Google offers the "Advanced Search" option, which you can use to select the specific terms you would like to search for:

All of the terms: German national soccer coach Löw
A specific group of words: German national soccer coach Löw
Some of the words: German national soccer coach Löw quarter finals
Unwanted words (i.e. without these terms): German national soccer coach Löw

Other search engines often require very different forms of spelling for the logical connectors. In the case of professional offers, this information is on the help page.

Forms of spelling

Not every search engine comes with a German "umlaut" (two dots over the vowel), the German double-S ("ß") or words with accents. Test your own search engine by entering the following words in lower case letters and see what the results are and how the search engine you have selected functions:

münster muenster munster

straße strasse

rené rene

Upper or lower case?

Most search engines deliver their results regardless of capitalizing or its absence. You can also test this with two comparable inquiries. Here it is best to use an unusual term like declaration of independence/Declaration of Independence (or in German "Gipskartonschraube" / "gipskartonschraube").

Spelling in German is not what it used to be

As a result of the spelling reform for the German language, many ways of spelling have changed for German speakers, but not everyone wants to or can follow the new rules. To see this, individuals who know German can search for "dolphin" and "delfin" (dolphin). Many German speakers are still uncertain about the new rules for hyphenation and compound spelling. Even on serious websites, you can frequently find words that have been written incorrectly in this regard. Here a good example to search for is the German term "fälschlicher weise".
